Art School 1988 — 1994

York College of Arts and Technology / Wolverhampton School of Art.

I spent six years at art school, where I studied a wide range of disciplines, including printmaking, photography, typography, animation, fashion, storyboarding, illustration, and design. I also studied the history of art, design, and film. The experience had a transformative effect on my thinking and understanding of the world.

At the time, most of my work was created by hand. I learned to hand-render typography, set type with metal type or wood blocks, and would use Apple Macs to simply set and print out type. I also learned to trace type, photocopy it, manipulate it, and use other techniques to integrate it into my work.

I decided to focus on generating ideas and developing my art and design skills, rather than learning software packages. This didn't help me get work right away, but I was able to learn the software quickly once I started working.
